Notre Dame senior Teagan Kondik delivered the match-ending kill Oct. 29 to complete a 3-2 comeback over Beechwood and clinch the Pandas' fifth straight 9th Region volleyball championship.
The Pandas trailed two sets to none before storming back to win 24-26, 22-25, 25-13, 25-14, 15-10 at Dayton High School, according to the NKY Tribune.
Two area players earned all-tournament honors. Conner's Charlotte Patton and Ryle's Brodgett Burns were named to the 9th Region all-tournament team alongside Kondik, who took home the tournament's most valuable player award.
Patton had a strong postseason showing for the Cougars before their semifinal exit. In Conner's Oct. 28 semifinal loss to Beechwood, Patton recorded five kills in the third set alone, according to LINK nky. The Cougars finished 26-13.
Kondik leads the comeback
Beechwood, playing in its first 9th Region final since 2003, took the opening two sets behind senior Isabel O'Brien. The Tigers fought off a set point at 24-23 in the first set and won three straight points to take it 26-24. O'Brien recorded seven kills in the second set as Beechwood built a 2-0 lead.
Notre Dame flipped the match in the third set, scoring the first seven points and rolling to a 25-13 win. Junior middle hitter Makayla Roose was central to the turnaround.
Kondik scored seven points in the fourth set, and Roose added three during a 25-14 win that forced a fifth set. In the tiebreaker, Notre Dame used an 8-2 run to open an 11-4 lead. Beechwood rallied to 14-10 before Kondik ended it with a tomahawk spike, the NKY Tribune reported.
The 6-foot-1 outside hitter finished with a team-high 28 kills and 13 digs. Roose added 16 kills. Junior libero Kaia Tilden had 20 digs and four service aces.
Kondik was named tournament MVP. Tilden and Ellie Osterkamp also made the all-tournament team for Notre Dame.
Beechwood coach Matt Long credited Kondik's dominance in the final three sets.
"She's a great hitter, great swinger. She's hard to stop," Long said, according to the NKY Tribune.
Beechwood's historic run ends
The Tigers finished 35-5 and reached the 9th Region final for the first time since 2003. Beechwood became the first public school to reach the title match since Ryle in 2020, LINK nky reported.
O'Brien, named the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) 9th Region Player of the Year earlier in the week, and Macy Armstrong represented Beechwood on the all-tournament team.
