Florence Fire/EMS is turning its four stations into neighborhood hangouts in August, offering free ice cream sandwiches and a chance to meet the crews who respond to the city's emergencies.
The department's new "Ice Cream Sandwiches with Firefighters" series kicks off Aug. 6, at Station #34, 8101 Dream Street, and rotates to a different station each Thursday through Aug. 27. No registration is required. The events are open to all ages.
The city announced the series in an Aug. 5 press release, written by City Clerk/Public Relations Administrator Melissa Kramer. The department said families with kids, people stopping by after work and anyone looking for a summer treat are all welcome.
Visitors can tour the station, talk with firefighters and learn about the department's operations. As of 2024, Fire/EMS Chief Rodney Wren's department had 72 career personnel who responded to more than 10,700 incidents in a single year, including over 8,900 medical emergencies.
The series follows a similar model to Florence Police's "Popsicles with Police" stops at city parks in July. The department is also accepting applications for its free Citizen Fire Academy, a 10-week program for adults starting Sept. 2 at the same Dream Street station.
