Florence residents can get behind the wheel of a fire engine, learn basic rescue techniques and see how 911 dispatchers work this fall through a free program now accepting applications.
Florence Fire/EMS announced Aug. 4, that its 2026 Citizen Fire Academy is open to adults 18 and older who live, work or have an interest in the Florence community. The 10-week program runs every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., starting Sept. 2 and wrapping up Nov. 4 at Station 34, 8101 Dream Street.
Space is limited. The department urged interested residents to apply early, though no specific application deadline has been posted.
What participants will learn
The academy covers fire suppression operations, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, fire prevention and life safety education, fire investigations, 911 dispatch and communications, emergency preparedness, and specialized equipment and apparatus.
Through classroom presentations, hands-on demonstrations and interactive training, attendees will get a closer look at what Florence's firefighters and paramedics handle day to day, according to the city's announcement. Participants will operate firefighting equipment, observe emergency vehicles up close and interact directly with department personnel.
The program is built around giving residents a greater understanding of the responsibilities, challenges and professionalism required of today's first responders, the department said.

Fire/EMS Chief Rodney Wren leads the department, which serves the entire City of Florence.
