A superhero-themed 5K in Burlington on Saturday, Sept. 19, will raise money for volunteer advocates who represent children in family court.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of the Northern Bluegrass Region is hosting its 13th Annual Superhero 5K Run/Walk at England-Idlewild Park. Online registration closes the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to the event's RunSignUp page. Race-day registration opens at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K starts at 9:30 a.m.
The race includes a 5K run, a 5K walk and a Kids Fun Run. Children 12 and under participate free.
Last year's Superhero 5K drew more than 200 participants, the NKY Tribune reported. The Tribune said organizers are hoping for another strong turnout.
In 2025, CASA of the Northern Bluegrass Region served 260 children with the help of 90 active volunteers, a 13% increase from the previous year. Nicky Jeffries, executive director of CASA of the Northern Bluegrass Region, told the Tribune the organization is on pace to serve even more children in 2026.
"You don't have to be a runner to participate," Jeffries said. "Whether you run, walk, volunteer, sponsor or simply come out to cheer everyone on, you are helping us continue to provide a voice for children who need someone in their corner."
CASA recruits, trains and supports volunteers who speak for children's interests in family court proceedings. The Superhero 5K is one of the organization's primary fundraisers.
Beyond the race, the morning will feature a DJ, face painting, a balloon artist, raffles and awards. Kona Ice and Tom's Coffee will be on site. Joe Danneman will emcee.
Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero.
The Yung Family Foundation is the presenting sponsor.
