Boone County Public Library (BCPL) is filling its October and November calendars with colonial crafts, live music and local history through a new series called Revolutionary Read: Celebrating America's 250th.

The free program spans branches in Florence, Hebron, Burlington and Walton. It runs from Oct. 5 through Nov. 21 with events nearly every week.

BCPL is a grant recipient of the America250KY initiative, a statewide effort led by the Kentucky Historical Society to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, according to the library's program page. Boone County Government has also partnered with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Sons of the American Revolution, BCPL and the Boone County Historical Society to plan anniversary events countywide, according to the county's 2026 parks guide.

The series opens at the Florence Branch on Monday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. with Paper Patriots, where participants build a movable paper puppet of an influential American figure. The Hebron Branch hosts Rustic Rag Flag on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m., a hands-on session using an xTool laser cutter to create wooden flag decor.

Amy Owens, founder of Amo Ink, leads Colonial Calligraphy sessions at the Scheben Branch on Monday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. and again Monday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. Participants learn the English Roundhand script used to pen the Declaration of Independence.

One ticketed event stands out. The Spirits of the Revolution Ghost Walk takes place Thursday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at New Bethel Cemetery in Verona. Tickets cost $5 each and go on sale Sept. 15 at the Main Library in Burlington and the Walton Branch.

Violinist Jared Maucotel performs a patriotic concert at the Main Library on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. The Florence Branch hosts a History of Bookbinding presentation by the Cincinnati Book Arts Society on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Friends of Big Bone present a Paleoindigenous Peoples talk at the Scheben Branch on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.

November brings the DAR's Boone County Patriots presentation at the Walton Branch on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m., covering Revolutionary War heroes buried in Boone County. A Piatt Panel Discussion follows Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library. Local experts will discuss Jacob Piatt's service on George Washington's staff and his impact in Boone County. Piatt came to the county around 1795 and served as Boone County judge for 13 years, according to a Kentucky Historical Society marker.

The Florence Branch hosts Tin Punching, a colonial craft led by the Boone County Extension Office, on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. A Colonial Ball at the Main Library on Friday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. features games, door prizes, refreshments and a historic dance lesson. Costumes are optional but encouraged.

The series wraps Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Florence Branch with Breakup Letters to England, where participants make vintage paper and wax seals to compose a farewell note to King George III.
