The Ryle Raiders enter Friday's season opener ranked among Kentucky's top 10 football programs in four independent preseason systems, raising the stakes for an Aug. 21 rivalry matchup against Covington Catholic at Borland Stadium in Union.

Kentucky Sports Report slots Ryle at No. 10 statewide regardless of class. The Massey Rankings and MaxPreps each have the Raiders at No. 9. High School Football America places them at No. 10. The consensus: Ryle belongs in the state's top tier despite graduating most of its starters from last year's 10-4 squad that reached the Class 6A state semifinals, according to NKY Tribune columnist Dan Weber.

Friday's opponent is ranked right alongside them. CovCath checks in at No. 8 (MaxPreps), No. 10 (Massey), No. 13 (Kentucky Sports Report) and No. 7 (High School Football America). All four systems agree Louisville Trinity is the state's No. 1 team.

A fifth system, Sports Illustrated's Kentucky preseason Top 25, places Ryle lower at No. 19 and CovCath at No. 20, per SI.

Both teams are rebuilding.

The rankings land despite significant roster turnover for both programs. Ryle lost starting quarterback Nathan Verax, running back Jacob Savage (now at Indiana University) and its top two receivers. Sophomore Brody Smith, who has not attempted a pass in a varsity game, takes over under center.

Head coach Mike Engler, 93-55 entering his 12th season at Ryle with three region titles, told the NKY Tribune on Aug. 3 he preferred low expectations.

"Keep us flying under the radar … I want people to think we're going to be down," Engler said. "I think we're going to be pretty good. If we stay healthy, we've got a chance to be really good."

The Raiders return a veteran offensive line anchored by junior tackle Max Parsons (6-foot-4, 265 pounds), who holds Division I offers from Akron, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn and Miami of Ohio. On defense, senior safety Evan Kincaid tied for third in Kentucky with seven interceptions last season.

CovCath faces its own rebuild. The Colonels lost quarterback Cash Harney and running back Dylan Gaiser, who combined for 321 of CovCath's 375 offensive yards per game in 2025. Junior Dylan Courtney moves from receiver to quarterback, and Army commit Jonny Lind anchors the line.

As we reported Aug. 16, Ryle has won the last two meetings in the series, snapping a six-game winning streak by the Colonels. All six Cincinnati Enquirer writers picked CovCath to win.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Aug. 21, at Borland Stadium. Ryle travels to Conner on Aug. 28 for Week 2.
