Ryle beat Cooper 5-2 for the 33rd District boys soccer title Thursday, Oct. 15. The win at Boone County High School completed a Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) boys-and-girls district championship sweep for the Raiders.
The Ryle girls had already secured their crown a night earlier, routing Conner 7-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, as we reported Thursday. Both Ryle squads play in 9th Region Round 1 on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Cooper and Conner also advance to the region tournament as district runners-up. The boys bracket includes Dixie Heights, St. Henry, Beechwood, Newport Central Catholic, Highlands and two-time defending champion Covington Catholic, according to the NKY Tribune. The girls field features Notre Dame, Holy Cross, St. Henry, Dixie Heights, Newport Central Catholic and two-time defending champion Highlands.
The boys title game capped a dominant postseason run for Ryle (18-3-1). The Raiders blanked host Boone County 3-0 in the Oct. 13 semifinal before putting five past Cooper in the final.
Cooper (7-10-5) earned its championship berth the hard way. The Jaguars needed eight rounds of penalty kicks to edge Conner 2-1 in the semifinal, Link NKY reported. Eddie Morales scored Cooper's regulation goal, with Cam Cameron providing the assist.
Dallas Marshall scored for Conner (7-8-1) in that semifinal, assisted by Anthony Ortiz. Goalkeeper Calvin Huxel made four saves. The loss means Conner, last year's region runner-up, misses the 9th Region tournament for the first time since 2023.
On the girls side, Ryle rolled through the bracket with an 11-0 semifinal win over Boone County on Oct. 12 before the 7-1 championship rout of Conner. Conner reached the final after beating Cooper 3-2 in the girls semifinal.
Ryle boys head coach Stephen Collins preached a one-game-at-a-time approach heading into district play. "One bad play, one mistake, one bad penalty could be your season, and that's how we've approached what we need to do to move on," Collins told Link NKY on Oct. 9, after the Raiders' regular-season finale against Highlands.
Both Ryle teams advance to the 9th Region tournament, along with district runners-up Cooper on the boys side and Conner on the girls side. The boys tournament is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 20.
