Ryle boys basketball has a new coach.

The Raiders announced Aug. 22 that Ryland Newman will join the program's coaching staff, bringing nearly a decade of experience across multiple levels of basketball. Newman also played at the collegiate level as a Division II athlete.

The program said on X that Newman will bring passion and energy, describing him as an educator with a supportive family who embodies "The Raider Way."

Newman's specific role on the staff has not been announced. The hire comes less than two weeks after the program thanked former head freshman coach Jon Erickson for his years of service. Ryle posted its farewell to Erickson on Aug. 10, calling him a huge part of the program.

Newman's focus, according to the program's Instagram announcement, will be on developing players both on and off the court. His previous coaching stops were not disclosed.

The addition comes at a pivotal moment for Ryle basketball. The Raiders posted four consecutive 20-win seasons, tying the longest such streak in school history, but graduated key contributors including Anthony Coppola, the program's all-time assists leader who signed with George Washington University. AJ Curry, a 2026 graduate, signed with Tennessee.

Still, the cupboard is far from bare. Rising sophomore Jayden McClain, a 6-foot-6 guard who averaged 12.8 points and 8.4 rebounds as a freshman and already holds the program's blocked-shots record, committed to the University of Kentucky in July. Junior guard Holden Smith spent the summer leading his AAU team to an undefeated 15-0 record and four tournament titles while averaging 17 points per game.

Five former Raiders now play Division I basketball, a pipeline the coaching staff has built over recent seasons. Newman joins a program with momentum and young talent heading into the 2026-27 season.

The Kentucky high school basketball season opens in late November.
