Nearly 30 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are expected to gather in Covington on Friday, Aug. 28, for a free speed-dating event hosted by The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky, the nonprofit that operates group homes in Florence, Burlington and Union.

The evening runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Zembrodt Education Center, 104 W. Pike St. It's open to adults 38 and older.

"We're trying to reach an older audience by creating a space that builds confidence, strengthens communication skills, and allows genuine connections to form," event coordinator Lexi Martini told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The format is straightforward: participants cycle through brief one-on-one conversations, then tell organizers whom they'd like to see again. Staff exchange contact information only when interest is mutual.

The Point/Arc held its first speed-dating night on April 25, 2026. The organization said structured events like these remain uncommon for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly in Kentucky.

Boone County connection

The Point/Arc, founded in 1972, serves more than 1,400 people annually across Northern Kentucky. Six of its 18 group homes are in Boone County, spread across Florence, Burlington and Union, housing a share of the nearly 70 residents the organization supports in its homes regionwide.

As we reported Aug. 5, founder Judi Gerding recently turned 86 as the nonprofit marked 54 years of service.
