Kentucky's first IKEA opens Aug. 25 at Florence Square Shopping Center. Boone County shoppers will have a local option for the Swedish retailer's kitchen, bedroom and bathroom design services without the drive to West Chester, Ohio.

The 4,200-square-foot Plan and Order Point at 7735 Mall Road sits directly across from the Florence Mall. It's a smaller-format concept focused on one-on-one design consultations rather than the warehouse browsing experience IKEA is known for. Customers can plan furnishing projects with an IKEA employee, place orders in-store and choose home delivery or local pickup.

Online shoppers will also be able to designate the Florence location as their pickup point, skipping the trip to IKEA's full-size store in West Chester.

"We are excited to open our doors and eagerly anticipate welcoming not only Florence area residents, but also the state of Kentucky to this new IKEA experience," IKEA West Chester market manager Susan Blackstock said in a WLWT report published Aug. 19.

IKEA first announced plans for the Florence store in November 2025, originally targeting a spring opening. The company has been expanding its Plan and Order Point format nationally, pushing into smaller markets that can't support a full warehouse store.

The Florence location won't include a showroom floor, dining area or kids' play area. Those remain exclusive to West Chester.

The new store lands on Mall Road at a moment of contrast for Florence retail. The Florence Mall across the street reported a vacancy rate near 60% as of June, according to LINK nky. But the city's broader retail market remains tight, with less than 4% vacancy citywide.

IKEA has not announced store hours or whether the Florence location will accept walk-ins or require appointments for design consultations.
