Boone County residents can drop off old tires for free through Aug. 22 at the Boone County Recycling Center in Burlington.

The three-day Waste Tire Collection Event opened Aug. 20 and accepts passenger, tractor, semi, bicycle, motorcycle, golf cart, side-by-side and go-kart tires, according to NKyTribune. Tires can be on or off rims. Rims alone are accepted too.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The recycling center is at 3275 Maplewood Drive, Burlington.

The county runs the event in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Waste Management. A 2023 Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Area resource guide noted that free tire collection events in the region happen roughly every three years, with landfills and transfer stations charging a fee for tire disposal at other times.

In its Aug. 20 announcement, the county said the event helps prevent illegal dumping. That's been a documented problem: in late 2025, 16-year-old Natalie Stow organized a cleanup of the South Fork of Gunpowder Creek where volunteers pulled tires and other debris from the waterway, and Boone County Solid Waste hauled the material away, according to the county. "Without the help of Boone County Solid Waste, I would still have a pile of trash bags and other junk sitting in my side yard without any reliable way to get rid of it," Stow said at the time.

What's not accepted

Foam-filled tires, calcium-filled tires, off-road construction tires, tracks and solid tires will be turned away. The event is for residents only. Tire retailers, scrap yards, recycling businesses and other commercial operations are not eligible.

After the event

Once the collection wraps up Saturday at noon, residents who miss it can contact Boone County Solid Waste at 859-334-4808. The recycling center's regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
