Six Boone County library branches and the R.C. Durr YMCA in Burlington are open as cooling refuges through Sept. 3.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington issued a heat advisory covering the Greater Cincinnati region from 2 p.m. Sept. 1 through 8 p.m. Sept. 3, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. The heat index could reach 104 degrees.

Boone County officials told LINK nky that formal cooling centers have not been activated, but the library branches and YMCA are available as air-conditioned refuges during regular hours. The same locations served as cooling centers during a stretch of high temperatures in late June.

The R.C. Durr YMCA, at 5874 Veterans Way in Burlington, is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is (859) 534-5700.

All six Boone County Public Library branches are available during normal business hours:

  • Main Library, 1786 Burlington Pike, Burlington: Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m.
  • Florence Branch, 7425 U.S. 42, Florence: Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed Sundays.
  • Hebron Branch, 1863 North Bend Road, Hebron: Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m.
  • Scheben Branch, 8899 U.S. 42, Union: Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m.

  • Chapin Memorial Library, 6517 Market St., Petersburg: Monday–Thursday 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed Sundays. A library card and Express Access User Agreement are required for entry during unstaffed hours.

The weather service urges people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. The weather service also recommends checking on elderly relatives and neighbors.

Heat advisory conditions could extend into Sept. 4, particularly across southern counties. A gradual cooldown is expected over the weekend.

All Boone County Public Library branches will be closed Sept. 6, and Sept. 7, for the Labor Day holiday.
