Ryle can clinch an outright Class 6A District 6 championship Friday, Oct. 23, when the Raiders travel to Simon Kenton in Independence.
The Raiders (4-4) have won three straight after opening the season 1-4, allowing just 12 points over that stretch, according to LinkNKY. Senior running back Cruze Sauley has rushed for 463 yards in those three victories, including 174 yards on 20 carries in the 27-6 win over Great Crossing on Friday, Oct. 16.
Ryle head coach Mike Engler, now in his 13th season, said in an August preseason interview with the NKyTribune that he welcomed low expectations after losing most starters from a 10-4 squad that reached the Class 6A state semifinals. "I want people to think we're going to be down," Engler said at the time. "I think we're going to be pretty good."
The defense has backed up that prediction. Andrew Smith posted nine tackles and an interception against Great Crossing. Jayden Thomas and Jesse Nunn each added eight tackles, while Charlie Park had seven tackles and half a sack, LinkNKY reported.
Simon Kenton (4-4) enters the game off a 13-12 comeback win over Campbell County. Quarterback Grant Webb carried the ball 33 times for 185 yards and a touchdown in that game. A Pioneers win combined with a Great Crossing loss to Campbell County would give Simon Kenton the outright district title. If both Simon Kenton and Great Crossing win, a three-way tie would be settled by the KHSAA's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
Ryle sits 14th in the Class 6A RPI. A district title would secure a home playoff opener and a second home game if Ryle wins its first-round matchup, LinkNKY reported.
Cooper's Freihofer piling up numbers
Scott (2-6) is coming off a 35-7 loss to Cooper. Senior Corey Freihofer carried the ball 36 times for 220 yards and four touchdowns in that game, then returned an interception for a fifth score on defense.
Freihofer has rushed for 707 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season, with three interceptions on defense. Carson Clark added six tackles, three sacks and four tackles for loss against Scott.
The Jaguars rank ninth in the Class 5A RPI with two regular-season games remaining. Cooper travels to Boone County on Friday, Oct. 23.
Conner, Scott meet for 3-seed
Conner returns from a bye week to play at Scott on Friday, Oct. 23, with the Class 5A District 5 3-seed on the line. Scott (2-6) has lost six straight since a 2-0 start.
Conner sits 27th in the Class 5A RPI, while Scott is 36th.
Boone County falls to Dixie Heights
Boone County lost to Dixie Heights 49-3 on Friday, Oct. 16. Malik Johnson led the Rebels with 102 yards on 28 carries, and Wisdom Ordu connected on a field goal. Gage Booth added a fumble recovery on defense.
The Rebels sit 37th in the Class 5A RPI. Boone County hosts Cooper on Friday, Oct. 23.
