Boone, Campbell and Kenton county residents can drop off hazardous household items for free at Thomas More Stadium in Florence on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Area is hosting the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Florence Y'alls' ballpark, 7950 Freedom Way. Advance registration is required.

Residents should print and complete the registration form before arriving and bring it with them. The form is available on SD1's website.

What you can bring

SD1's accepted-items list is broad. Electronics qualify if they take a battery or have a cord. Televisions are accepted with a limit of two per household.

The event also takes aerosol cans, household cleaners, pesticides, poisons, corrosives, flammables and car fluids. Fire extinguishers, oil-based paint (limit 10 cans), smoke detectors, light bulbs, e-cigarettes, batteries, adhesives, fuels, cylinders and tanks are accepted, among other items.

Commercial-grade gases and large appliances are not accepted.

What stays home

Latex paint, appliances, fertilizer, medications, tires, ammunition, explosives and fireworks will be turned away, among other items.

Latex paint is water-based and not classified as hazardous, SD1 said. The district advises residents to dry it out using concrete mix, cat litter or shredded paper, then place the open can in regular trash.

Why it matters

Improperly disposed hazardous items can leak into soil, storm drains and waterways, according to SD1. The annual collection gives residents a way to dispose of materials that do not belong in curbside bins.

The event is limited to Boone, Campbell and Kenton county residents.
