Jetly Kincho, 24, of Florence died early Thursday, Oct. 8, after his car left an Interstate 74 exit ramp and struck a metal light pole in Green Township, Ohio.
Green Township police said they were dispatched to the eastbound I-74 exit ramp at Rybolt Road around 2:18 a.m. for a crash with entrapment, WLWT reported.
A red 2015 Chrysler 200 had been traveling south on the ramp when it went off the left side of the roadway and hit the pole, according to police.
Green Township firefighters had to extricate Kincho from the vehicle, Green Township Police Lt. Jeff Sabers confirmed to FOX19. Kincho was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC), where he died from his injuries.
Kincho was the only person in the car. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.
WCPO also reported on the crash, citing Green Township police.
Crash cause under investigation
The crash shut down the I-74 eastbound exit ramp for several hours the morning of Oct. 8. The ramp reopened around 7:30 a.m.
Green Township police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Investigators are looking at whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
Kentucky seatbelt enforcement campaign begins Oct. 9.
Kincho's death came one day before the start of Operation Crash Reduction, a statewide seatbelt enforcement campaign running Oct. 9–12. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety organized the effort alongside state and local law enforcement and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), according to NKY Tribune.
According to NHTSA, seatbelts reduce the risk of fatalities by 45% for front-seat vehicle occupants when worn correctly.
The campaign will involve law enforcement agencies across Kentucky and several other states focused on seatbelt compliance.
