Florence residents can donate blood Thursday, Oct. 8, when the City of Florence and Hoxworth Blood Center team up for a community blood drive at the Florence Government Center.

The Hoxworth donor bus will be parked near the north parking lot at 8100 Ewing Blvd., according to a city announcement written by Melissa Kramer, the city's public relations administrator.

Appointments are strongly encouraged.

Every donor will receive a wearable blanket featuring Hoxworth's mascot, Buddy the Blood Drop, while supplies last. The blanket is part of Hoxworth's October donor appreciation campaign across its service area, according to a University of Cincinnati news release published Sept. 30.

Why give

Hoxworth Blood Center, part of the University of Cincinnati, needs 450 blood and platelet donors every day to serve more than 30 hospitals across Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Northern Kentucky falls squarely in that service territory. A single whole blood donation can help save up to three lives, according to Hoxworth.

"Every time someone gives blood, they are giving a patient and their family something far more valuable than any thank-you gift — donors are giving them hope," Dr. David Oh, director of Hoxworth Blood Center, said in the UC news release.

Founded in 1938, Hoxworth collects more than 100,000 units of blood annually from local donors and operates seven neighborhood donor centers across the Tri-State area.
