Three Boone County football programs lost Saturday, Sept. 19, and the fourth never got to play.
Ryle fell 28-0 to Highlands in a game called at halftime because of lightning, LINK nky reported. Boone County dropped a 38-26 decision at Mason County. Conner was blanked 47-0 by Simon Kenton in a four-hour marathon interrupted by repeated weather delays. Cooper's trip to DuPont Manual in Louisville was canceled outright.
The results leave Ryle (1-4) and Conner (1-4) searching for answers, Boone County (2-3) heading into a bye week and Cooper (3-1) still waiting to play its fifth game.
Ryle 0, Highlands 28
The Raiders have not scored in three consecutive games. After a Week 3 shutout by Cooper and a Week 4 blanking by Christian Academy of Louisville, Highlands' defense smothered Ryle again with six tackles for loss and four sacks in just one half. Jimi Cox recorded two of those sacks.
Highlands quarterback Bryce Armstrong threw for 122 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 60 yards and a third score. The game was called at halftime after repeated lightning delays.
Head coach Mike Engler's squad lost 25 players from last season and returned fewer than 10 starters. Ryle's lone win came in Week 2, a 36-21 victory over Conner. The Raiders travel to Tates Creek next.
Boone County 26, Mason County 38
Malik Johnson rushed for 191 yards and a touchdown for the Rebels in Maysville, and quarterback Asa LeGrand threw three touchdown passes. Amare Newberry caught two of those scores and William Randall hauled in the third.
Boone County trailed 19-7 before grabbing a 20-19 lead. Mason County answered with 19 unanswered points. Three Boone County turnovers against one for Mason County proved decisive, and the Royals piled up 326 rushing yards.
Johnson, a senior, rushed for 1,188 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, the NKY Tribune reported. Head coach Dan Court said in a July 31 preseason preview that the Rebels wanted to host a playoff game this year. At 2-3 with district play approaching, that goal faces a steep climb.
The Rebels have a bye before hosting Conner on Friday, Oct. 2.
Conner 0, Simon Kenton 47
Conner coach Chase Floyd summed up a rough night at Chlorine Menefee Stadium: "I don't think the delay hurt us. I think we just came out, and we were flat."
The Cougars managed just 126 yards on 56 plays against a Simon Kenton defense that forced a fumble and an interception. Simon Kenton quarterback Grant Webb threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Peyton Testerman scored twice on the ground.
The game stretched past four hours because of lightning. After Simon Kenton's homecoming festivities ended around 8:17 p.m., the first bolt was spotted. Play finally resumed around 10:06 p.m., according to LINK nky's game recap. Floyd wanted to push the second half to Saturday so his team could regroup. Simon Kenton coach Joe Wynn preferred to finish the game that night.
Conner (1-4) got its first win under Floyd in Week 4 against Newport Central Catholic but has now lost four of five.
Cooper: game canceled
The Jaguars never took the field. Lightning wiped out Cooper's trip to Louisville before the game could begin. Cooper (3-1) opens Class 5A District 6 play at Conner next Friday under first-year head coach Adam Begley.
