The annual Pickles and Wieners Feast, the fundraiser that covers more than half of Special Olympics Northern Kentucky's operating budget, returns to Florence on Sept. 26.

Former Kentucky state Sen. John Schickel's event raised $58,000 last year, according to the NKY Tribune. That total covered more than half of the volunteer-run program's annual budget, Special Olympics Northern Kentucky Program Director Mark Staggs said.

The free-admission event runs noon to 5 p.m. at Erlanger Lions Park, 5996 Belair Drive in Florence. It will feature food, a silent auction, two raffles, live music by the Lazy River Band and a New Riff bourbon tasting for guests 21 and older.

"This event is supposed to be simple: Come as you are, bring your family, eat a pickle and a hot dog, listen to some good music and help some wonderful athletes," Schickel said. "People showed up in a big way last year. We raised $58,000, and I want to see if Northern Kentucky can top that this year."

The Feast started in 2012. It has since grown into a gathering that draws statewide political figures alongside families and local supporters.

Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore compared the event to Western Kentucky's famous Fancy Farm picnic. "It has developed into quite a gathering spot for persons seeking statewide political office, and I look forward to seeing my friends from around the state," Moore said.

Special Olympics Northern Kentucky is a volunteer-run program that provides year-round athletic opportunities for local athletes. The organization depends heavily on the Feast each fall, based on Staggs' description of the $58,000 share of its budget.
