Robin DeGroff, a retired elementary school teacher turned impasto painter, will display her textured landscape paintings at the Curt Bessette Art Gallery inside Boone County Public Library's Main Library at 1786 Burlington Pike starting Saturday, Oct. 31.

The exhibition runs through Friday, Dec. 4, according to the library's event listing. Visitors can view the work and view artwork offered for sale.

DeGroff majored in art in college but did not pick up a paintbrush until after she retired from teaching elementary school, the library said. She works in acrylics, building up thick layers of paint with brushes and palette knives. The technique, called impasto, produces the heavily textured surfaces that define her landscapes.

Her subjects draw on reference photos from her own travels and those of friends. The library described her style as impressionistic at times.

DeGroff is one in a line of regional and national artists who have shown work at the first-floor gallery since it opened in May 2019. The space is named for Curt Bessette, an artist from childhood who became known among peers simply as "the Artist," according to the library. Bessette served on the Boone County Public Library Board of Trustees from July 2016 to February 2017.

The gallery gives local creators a venue to show and sell their work. Artists interested in a future display can find guidelines and a request form at bcpl.org/bessette-gallery. All artwork must be ready to hang with wire or another appropriate method, the library's guidelines state.

Boone County Public Library posted about the upcoming show on X on Thursday, Oct. 22, linking to a preview of DeGroff's paintings.
