Conner claimed the 33rd District volleyball championship Thursday, Oct. 22, defeating rival Ryle 3-2 in a five-set match at Conner High School in Hebron.

Conner won 23-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-18, 15-13.

The victory flips last year's district result. The Cougars dethroned the defending champions in Conner’s own gym, according to LINK nky's tournament scoreboard.

The NKY Tribune confirmed the result in its district roundup published Oct. 23.

Both Boone County schools had cruised into the final with semifinal sweeps Tuesday, Oct. 20. Ryle beat Boone County 3-0, and Conner dispatched Cooper 3-0. The championship was the only match in the 33rd District bracket to go the full five sets.

Conner junior outside hitter Charlotte Patton, the 9th Region's only returning first-team all-state player, anchored the Cougars' attack. Patton recorded 511 kills last season and finished 15th statewide in kills per set at 4.91, the NKY Tribune reported in August. She plays under Cougars coach Doug Rabe, with returning setters Shylyn Koerber and Alexis Kampsen distributing the offense.

Ryle opened the 2026 season ranked No. 18 in the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) preseason poll. Conner started at No. 17. The KVCA 9th Region preseason top five: No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 2 Beechwood and St. Henry (tie), No. 4 Ryle and No. 5 Conner.

The district title is new hardware for the Cougars, who finished as runners-up in 2025 before falling to St. Henry 3-0 in the opening round of the 9th Region tournament. Ryle reached the regional semifinals last season.

Both teams advance to the eight-team 9th Region tournament at Dayton High School. Conner faces Dixie Heights at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, while Ryle plays St. Henry at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. The teams are on opposite sides of the bracket and could meet again in the championship match at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Regional semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28.
